Carvelas = Cash

After directing the LV feat Okmalumkoolkat music video last year I got a new fascination with the Skhotane culture of South Africa. Everyone has an opinion on it and as per usual no one really knows anything about it. I decided to go out and spend some time in Orange Farm with my colleague Sello who runs the Real Action Pantsula Dance crew. He introduced me to some of the guys and it was interesting to see how and what the culture was all about.

Sello was more interested in the dance moves performed by the groups and we both had vast discussions around the way that Pantsula culture back in the day had very negative connotations surrounding it as guys used to commit crime to be able to afford the fashion they wore too and it too has been said that young Skhotanes will go to any measure to be able to afford their flashy clothes. However the group I met was mostly funded by one guy who had received a large payout from the road accident fund after been in an accident.

I decided to publish a story purely about their shoes, most of them a brand called Carvela, which is made in Italy and supposedly designed for driving sports cars, hence the reason why the boxes that they pose with have picture of Lambo's and Porche's on them. I also decided that in a culture which is mostly about been recognised it would be poignant to not show any of the faces of my subjects thus not buying into the culture. The story was published in the Paris based Clam magazine and you can see the article below.

The work was recently on exhibit at The Circa gallery in Rosebank, Johannesburg as part of a larger group show. I named the series at the exhibition Carvelas = Cash.

A Portrait of William Kentridge

During my shoot for AFAR media last year where I was sent with a group of travellers from the USA to experience Johannesburg I got to spend a little time in the acclaimed artist William Kentridge's studio in Arts on Main in Johannesburg. I had a short introduction with the man himself, but enough time to snap this portrait in his studio.

Happy New Rolling Stone Cover (And New Year) with HHP

In the December issue of Rolling I was graced with my second cover of the now one year old magazine. The idea was to portray HHP (Hip Hop Pantsula) as the boss (Which he is known as) and major trend setter in South African Hip-Hop. Accompanied by an immaculate and in-depth story by Bongani Madondo its worth checking out.

The shoot was set in Alexandra Township, we shot with HHP's dance crew which are a group of super talented guys from East Rand in Johannesburg. I wanted to portray current Township Fashion Trends including the super popular t-shirts worn by the Isikhotane mixed with the traditional Pantsula Dickies / work wear.

Thanks #Bosso aka HHP and Rolling Stone Magazine.

The Drums South Africa / We-Are-Awesome & Adidas

Here is a new video I have recently collaborated on with We-Are-Awesome in Cape Town on The Adidas Originals 'The Drums' tour through South Africa. It was a pleasure to work Adriaan Louw. There are more to come as we have partnered up two up and coming projects too; The 5-Gum Hudson Mohawke / A-Trak concert and the recent Steve Aoki tour through South Africa. It has been a great opportunity to head back to my routes and work with amazing musicians and create amazing live music content.

Over the last year I got to team up with stylist Natalia Fernandez and make up artist Natasha Kruger, our newest shoot was for Joburg Magazine, a smaller publication based on the culture and happenings in our home city.

Little Dragon in Soweto

A few months ago I had the privilege of touring with swedish band Little Dragon. While on tour the band performed a gig in Soweto. In one of our short moments of pause I managed to get this group image under the power lines outside Chaf Pozi.

Team Rwanda - Worldwide Cylcing Atlas (it)

Been at Fabrica in Italy for one year in 2010 was one of the best experiences of my life, I was humbled and got to meet some of the most talented and insightful individuals from around the world. Two years have passed and I was approached by one of my colleagues (Matteo de Mayda) in Treviso, Italy, where Fabrica is based to work on a project of his called the Worldwide Cycling Atlas.

I was commissioned by the website sponsored by bicycle seat company Selle Royal, to shoot a story about the Rwanda Cycling Team. I have posted the video and some of the images of the riders who where phenomenal in every way. I feel privileged and amazed by the experience.

Sprite Be Uncontainable

I never really put up advertising work onto my blog and thought it was about time. There are a couple of billboard campaigns floating around South Africa which I wanted to feature, the first one being for Sprite, which I shot earlier this year. It was for the Uncontainable campaign, which climaxed in a concert last week in Johannesburg featuring Talib Kweli. The ads where made by Ogilvy Johannesburg under the Art Direction Zach Nossel.

Check it out.
